1993-1994 All-Star Game

[1993-1994 FHL All-Star game as reported by Jean-Henri Duteau on January 18th, 1994]

Ta da!! The first annual FHL All-Star Game has completed. Due to some stormy weather here in Ottawa, (never mind the earthquake in LA! let's hope our FHL buddies from LA and everyone else there is alright) the stats service went down However, they're back up and I'm back up so here are the all-star stats.

At the end of the message, I have the actual breakdown, but since this was supposed to simulate a real all-star game, I have arbitrarily broken the stats down into a scoring summary to make it a bit more realistic.

The 1st FHL All-Star Game began with a bang. The Calgary Saddledome, home of the Calgary Flames, and therefore host to the game, was jampacked with fans from all across the continent. They would bear witness to the first all-star game that brought players from both conferences of the FHL together in a rough, hard fought game.

The West opened the scoring with Andreychuk one-timing it past Richter. The assists went to Gilmour and Murphy. Less than two minutes later, Richter was beat on the short side by Brett Hull who received a beautiful floater pass from the master, Wayne Gretzky. Play was quite chippy from that moment on with the two teams amassing 20 PIM in the first period. On one of their 3 power plays, the West added a third goal with Roenick and Fedorov going in on a two-on-one due to a great defensive play by Rob Blake. Fedorov was able to walk around Adam Oates which left Roenick all alone to put it by Richter. By the end of the first period, the West had dealt themselves a 4-1 lead with Shanahan netting one from Gretzky and Coffey. The East's lone goal came from Pavel Bure as Jeff Brown sent him on a breakaway and he got it past Potvin.

However, the second period saw two completely different teams emerge from the dressing rooms. The West went up by four on Yzerman's nice goal which was assisted by Yashin, who dug it out of the corner for him. This only seemed to turn on the East team who answered with five straight goals to take the lead 6-5. Mogilny and Lindros proved to be an effective as they combined for two goals, the first Mogilny from Lindros and Bourque, while Lindros used Mogilny and Jagr as decoys to power it in. With the changing of the goalies, the East line of Emerson, Tkachuk, and Verbeek sparked for two goals with Emerson potting one from Thachuk and Galley, and Scott Stevens getting the lone goal from the defense of either team from Emerson and Verbeek. On their power play, Recchi managed to get it past Belfour on a beautiful passing play from Bourque and Joe Sakic. The teams went to the dressing rooms all a fire as a mini-brawl taking place sparked by a fight between Lyle Odelein and Tie Domi. Quite a few penalties were the result and this seemed to hamper the East more than it did the West.

Bure went on another end-to-end rush as Recchi won the faceoff, sent it back to Garry Galley who threaded the needle to catch Bure on another breakaway. He had just as much success and the East went up 7-5. That would be the end of the East's scoring however. Gilmour and Andreychuk scored two goals on Hasek, Gretzky slipped it by an a feed from Shanahan, and Fedorov and Yzerman combined for another goal. Along with Hull's second of the night on a power play, from Gilmour and Yzerman, the West came storming back to victory with a final score of 10 -- 7. It was a well played game with some good hits and a lot of intensity. The players all expressed their desire to do this "all over again next year" and so did the fans.

There you have it, folks. The scoring summary of the 1st FHL All-Star game. In the real stats, the East dominated the PIM, but that was it. The GPTS were close, but the Goals and Assists weren't really. Doug Gilmour was really the difference, although an argument could be made for Gretzky and Andreychuk as well. I hope you all enjoyed the rundown and here are the official stats for the all-star players from the period of January 3rd - January 16th:
